Marco Polo

Venetian Merchant and Explorer (1254–1324)

Marco Polo’s travels to Asia (1271–1295) introduced Europeans to the cultures, riches, and technologies of the East. His book, commonly titled The Travels of Marco Polo, described his journeys at the court of Kublai Khan and ignited European fascination with Asia.

Though some details remain disputed, Marco’s vivid accounts influenced cartography, trade, and exploration — inspiring later voyagers such as Christopher Columbus.

“I did not tell half of what I saw, for I knew I would not be believed.”

Marco Polo remains the archetype of the medieval explorer: a bridge between worlds who broadened horizons and helped launch an age of intercontinental connection.
